The Real AI Threats: Automated Hacking And Surveillance, Conventional Weapons Development, Biological Misuse
Techdirt has just written about concerns that AI development is proceeding more quickly than human oversight can monitor and control it. Since then, there has been lively debate about whether those fears are real or overblown. They mainly focus on the possible future threats from AI systems using RSI — recursive self-improvement — to drive […] -
Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera. Its Data Shows How the System Really Works
submitted by Powderhorn to technology
84 points | 9 comments
https://www.wired.com/story/hackers-flock-camera-data-shows-how-system-works/Hackers ripped down a Flock camera above a roadway, made a near-complete copy of the data stored inside it, and shared the files with 404 Media and WIRED, revealing in new detail how exactly Flock Safety’s cameras track the movements of both vehicles and people. The hackers say they are also publishing details on how they managed to obtain the software, in the hopes that other people may copy them.
The breach provides an unprecedented look inside a system that Flock has described as protected by on-device encryption. The hackers were able to copy the camera’s storage and recover an encryption key stored on the device, which unlocked videos of thousands of vehicle detections. The hackers shared the material with 404 Media and the transparency nonprofit Distributed Denial of Secrets, which shared the data with WIRED. 404 Media and WIRED then analyzed those files as part of a joint investigation.
While much of the automatic license plate reader’s most sensitive storage remained encrypted and inaccessible, the joint analysis of the recovered data shows that software running on the device explicitly detects people as well as vehicles, license plates, and bicycles. The camera can produce dozens of images of a single passing vehicle and, according to several weeks of recovered logs, generated more than a million images. Its computer-vision software also sometimes isolated bumper stickers and other graphics, including, in one case, an American flag patch on a motorcyclist’s saddlebag.

Show HN: ctx – Git blame that returns the original agent transcript
I built ctx to give agents a way to do a fast local search over previous session transcripts.
But I wanted to also give them a way to immediately surface "which agent wrote this exact line of code".
So you can start with a commit, a file, a line, or a PR, and then deterministically surface the exact tool call that wrote it, and the full agent transcript from that session.
It's really useful when you want your agents to know why code was written the way it was. It's kind of like a "super comment".
A normal code comment does leave some information about why code is the way it is.
But if you have selective access to the full original transcript, you can see everything about the code's provenance (like what tests were run, what was the reason it was there in the first place, etc)
This type of information would be way too verbose for a human to find useful. But agents can just ingest this stuff and make great use of it.
I like to instruct the agents to delegate this type of research work to cheaper high-throughput subagents like Luna for example.

What's With All These 'Fly Brain Simulations'? The Viral Jokes And Memes About A Fruit Fly's Brain Being Mapped Explained
submitted by themachinestops to technology
16 points | 3 comments
https://sg.news.yahoo.com/whats-fly-brain-simulations-viral-144806619.htmlcross-posted from: lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/75561665

In September 2026, the release of a complete map of an adult male fruit fly’s neural connections gave the internet a new scientific dataset to experiment with (and meme).
Within days, social media users were connecting simulations of the fly’s neural network to everything from Beat Saber and Minecraft to cryptocurrency trading and parallel parking, turning the fruit fly brain into the centerpiece of a growing series of memes and absurd experimental projects.
The trend quickly became known for viral videos showing the simulated fly brain performing increasingly unexpected tasks, such as playing video games, trading Bitcoin and driving.
So, how did a scientific breakthrough become a source of viral internet experiments? Let’s find out. Here’s what’s going on with all the “Fruit Fly Brain Simulation” memes.
Where Did ‘Fly Brain Simulations’ Come From?
The meme originated back on September 3rd, 2026, following the release of MaleCNS v1.0, a complete wiring diagram of an adult male fruit fly’s central nervous system created by HHMI Janelia’s FlyEM team, the Cambridge Connectomics Group and Google Research.
The dataset maps roughly 165,000–166,000 neurons and millions of synaptic connections, traced from electron-microscope images of a real fly.
It was released as an openly available dataset that could be downloaded and simulated, following earlier efforts such as FlyWire’s mapping of the female fruit fly brain.
Later that day, the official News from Google X / Twitter account (@NewsFromGoogle) then posted about the scientific breakthrough, informing people of the marvel of science.

Within days of the release, developers began running leaky-integrate-and-fire simulations of the connectome and connecting the fly’s sensory and motor neurons to external inputs and outputs.
On September 7th, 2026, YouTuber Ro0oney uploaded a video titled “I Put A Fly’s Conscious Brain into Minecraft,” showing how they simulated the fruit fly in the survival game Minecraft.
The video received over hundreds of thousands of views and tens of thousands of likes in just a few days, becoming one of the earliest major viral posts about the fly brain and humorous simulations using it — subsequently kicking off a slew of other jokes.
How Are The ‘Fruit Fly Brain Simulations’ Used In Memes?
As more developers, researchers and social media users experimented with the virtual fruit fly brain, the dataset quickly became a source of memes centered around putting the simulated fly into increasingly unusual situations.
Various clips shared online showed the simulated fruit fly playing games, trading cryptocurrency and controlling a vehicle, with each new experiment adding another use for the publicly available neural network.
One especially viral example shows the simulated fly brain being used to play the virtual-reality rhythm game Beat Saber.
Another viral post shows the fly brain being given $100 to trade Bitcoin, with dopamine neurons stimulated when the fly makes a profit.
Another example shows the simulated fly-brain system driving and attempting to complete the “ultimate test” of parallel parking.
The trend also includes experiments placing the simulated fly brain inside virtual environments and allowing it to explore entirely on its own.
What Are Some Related Memes?
The Fly Brain Simulations trend is part of a broader pattern in which legitimate scientific research can quickly escape its original academic context and become meme fodder online.
Once unusual or unexpected findings from a study reach social media, users can turn the research itself into the basis for jokes, screenshots and viral discussions, often focusing on the strangest details of the findings.
One example is the “Doki Doki Literature Club! Birthing Fanfiction” story, also known as the “Extreme Outlier ChatGPT User,” a viral incident that emerged in early July 2026 after researchers published a study examining how people use AI for creative writing.
Doki Doki Literature Club! Birthing Fanfiction / Extreme Outlier ChatGPT User
The conversation around the viral “Extreme Outlier ChatGPT User” centered on an anonymous ChatGPT user identified in the paper as an “extreme outlier” who had generated thousands of fanfiction prompts about characters from Doki Doki Literature Club!, involving pregnancy, childbirth and related scenarios.
Screenshots and summaries of the findings quickly spread across social media over the summer, particularly Twitter / X, where users joked about the individual’s extraordinary dedication to the niche subject matter.
The findings came from the research paper “AI Fiction in the Wild,” published on June 24th, 2026, by researchers from the University of Washington and the University of Colorado Boulder, which analyzed more than 500,000 anonymized English-language ChatGPT conversations from the WildChat dataset.

Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
Hey HN,
I always had the problem that building HTML pages is really simple now, but trying to save data required hosting it somewhere, and sharing it afterwards was not easy. Over the last few months, I've been building an app called Capsule (it’s also the file extension name) written in Rust with Tauri 2.0 that allows packing an HTML app and its data into a single SQLite file.
The HTML file and any related assets are directly embedded in the database. User data can either be saved as a localStorage key/value store or via a MongoDB-inspired collections API as documents, saved in a table in the file. You can also save other assets, like PDF files or images, directly in the database to keep different documents together. All data can be easily exported to CSV or JSON if needed.
Privacy and security were a big priority for me, so documents cannot do anything out of the box. They don’t have direct access to the file system and they require permission to access the internet. The permission model is still something I’m working to improve. Capsule documents can also use local or remote AI models for document specific AI features.
One downside with this approach is that multiple people working on it will create different copies. To make it possible to merge different copies of the same file, each data entry has a unique UUID and timestamp.
I’m planning to open up the file format specification for the 1.0 version of the app so other apps can read or write Capsule files.
You can try it out in the web preview at https://withcapsule.app/preview with pre-built templates or use any AI provider of your choice to create a custom, Capsule-optimized app by using the following prompt:
"Please read the app wizard instructions at https://withcapsule.app/prompt.txt and help me design an app.“
I’m still working on the file format but there are migrations for each new version, so data should never be lost when using newer versions of the app in the future. Please let me know if you have any ideas or use cases where this might make sense or does not work.

VC isn’t VC anymore — understanding the rise of Cancer Capital
submitted by alyaza to technology
55 points | 2 comments
https://www.anildash.com/2026/09/02/cancer-capitalWe really, really need to talk about venture capital. Because it’s not “venture capital” anymore.
There’s a huge disconnect between what most people think of VC, where an investor has a big fund and cuts checks to help a founder build a company, and the current reality, where a handful of billionaire extremists use the cover of “VC” to advance an outrageous agenda where they’re accountable to no one.
I’m gonna explain this from a standpoint that almost never gets articulated: I’ve personally raised tens of millions of dollars in venture capital funding as CEO of startups, and been directly involved as a board member or advisor in raising hundreds of millions more. I’ve sat in board rooms, across the table from the people I’m talking about here, or been at the industry events that they frequent. So this isn’t sour grapes because these VCs wouldn’t cut me a check, or some chip on my shoulder about these investors due to a business deal. This is what I know about these bad actors because I’m part of the community of creators and inventors who build the things that they used to invest in — back when they still cared about innovation.
Many of the trends in society and politics that people are most angry about, from data centers being forced down everyone’s throats, to all of our favorite apps and services being enshittified, to politicians being paid to ignore the will of the people, are all being supercharged by these cancer capitalists. They have warped the structure of venture capital into a form of oligarchy that answers to no market, no regulators, and no voters. So it’s worth understanding exactly how they did it.
