Hi HN - I'm building Reef, a hosted git software that is Github-API compatible.
The site / landing page explains why & features, temporarily at: https://swtch.in/
I'm looking for feedback on the beta. I don't know if anyone would be interested as there already are many other git hosting software (gitlabs, gitea, forgejo, gogs etc) - but happy to share a demo, take feedback and answer any questions. Thanks.

Hi HN, I built Gat because I wanted one thing from data versioning: check out an old Git commit and recover the datasets, model weights, or assets that belong to it. It's basically a lock file for large files.
I’d appreciate any feedback!

I have used github, gitlab and bitbucket etc. Now all of them seems to be training all the code. How do one retain privacy while not paying for enterprise plans?
I know of gitlab offering a self hosted plan, but not really sure if that is worth it and how do we go about it. I am asking for a small team, wherre we don't have dedicated people to manage things like backups, uptime etc manually. we can do it but would ideally see what's the best way. and is there a downside of this approach except for pipelines.

Git is supposed to be bad at handling mono repos especially where there are many binary files like game projects repo, and also there are no permisson settings, but are important in game development. BlackGit's cli client lets you download only cared files through sparse-checkout(initially not even the default root files) with a mini agent to use natural languages to manipulate the repo, and blackgit's server serves a file level control layer as a proxy to upstreams(github/gitlab)

Imagine Git for model fine-tunes that also saves you storage.
DeltaTensors compresses fine-tuned model checkpoints by storing the weight difference from the base model instead of another full copy of the model.
If you have a bunch of fine-tunes or checkpoints from the same base model, you keep the base once and store a much smaller `.wdelta` for each version.
On a Qwen2.5-0.5B fine-tune, a 953 MB model compressed to a 294 MB delta. Reconstructing it changed perplexity from 19.11 to 19.22.
It works after training, so you do not need to use LoRA or change how you fine-tune the model. You can take an existing full fine-tune and compress it afterward.
It also supports chained deltas for model version history, Hugging Face Trainer checkpoints, and streaming compression/reconstruction so you do not need to load two full models into memory.

My workflow has shifted away from the features of code editors toward just the git integration: viewing commits, checking uncommitted changes, seeing what will go into the final PR, and so on. I'm used to JetBrains IDEs, so I still open them mainly for the git integration. I really like being able to view a diff there with the file tree next to it.
For the actual coding, I use Claude Code in my terminal. I know many of you use your IDE's AI integration for this, or the Codex/Claude desktop apps, which are essentially just AI plus git integration with no real editor. So the features IDEs build around writing code don't seem to matter as much anymore, at least for me.
I'm curious whether anyone else feels the same way. If you do, what do you use for git: an IDE, one of the AI desktop apps, or a dedicated git client? If you know of a good git client built for this new workflow, I'd love to hear about it.
