DC Circuit OK’s Hegseth’s Abuse Of A Crummy Statute To Punish AI Vendors Who Won’t Give Him The Deadly Toys He Wants
Pete Hegseth and Trump got a dubious win today: a 2-1 panel of the DC Circuit found that the designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk was not unlawful. It dismissed Anthropic’s challenge despite (1) a different court having found the exact opposite not that long ago; (2) being predicated on a statutory interpretation […] -

OpenAI Accuses Plaintiffs’ Lawyers Of Paying For, Hiding, And Then Laundering Sketchy Key Evidence In AI Copyright Case
A ton of attention was paid recently to some offhand statements from OpenAI and Microsoft employees that surfaced in filings in the NY Times’ ongoing case against OpenAI, which has been consolidated into a much larger class action lawsuit. As I argued earlier, that struck me as something of a nothingburger of a story, because […] -

Judge Blocks White House Press Ban; White House Spends Thursday Testing How Much Of The Court Order It Can Violate
On Monday we wrote about Donald Trump’s direct attack on the First Amendment and the free press by banning reporters from the White House. As we expected, a judge on Thursday morning issued a Temporary Restraining Order, blocking the White House from continuing this unconstitutional action, though (as happened the last time Trump tried this) […] -
Passport Control: How Myanmar’s military regime tracks down dissidents abroad.
submitted by alyaza to news
10 points | 0 comments
https://www.thedial.world/articles/news/myanmar-junta-passport-restrictionsHnin Aye sat listening with growing concern as the officer called out numbers at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok. “Why are they skipping me?” she thought. A former schoolteacher, she was waiting to get her passport renewed so she could stay in Thailand where she now lived and studied. A denied renewal could lead to imprisonment in Bangkok, or worse, being forced to return home.
Finally, when there was no one left in the room, the official told her to approach the desk. “You better call the person who has been assisting you,” he said. Hnin Aye, 33, glanced at her small red passport on the table, which she had submitted to the official earlier. It was her most prized possession. She snatched it and left to call her broker. She got lucky, the broker told her later; the embassy officials could have simply canceled her passport.
Hnin Aye is one of hundreds of thousands of civil servants who went on strike after the Myanmar military seized power in a coup in February 2021, overthrowing the democratically elected government. (Hnin Aye is a pseudonym.) The mass strike, known as the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), hoped to topple the regime through non-violence. The strike has undermined the junta’s ability to provide public services. Many hospitals and most public schools were completely shut following the coup, and many remain closed today, while others limp on with limited capacity. After the political crisis escalated to civil war, some who quit their jobs as part of the strike became civil servants in rebel territories, which are ruled through a patchwork of decentralized governments. Others fled the country entirely to escape persecution and to find new work as the economy collapsed.
Hnin Aye is one of an estimated 4 million Myanmar people living in Thailand, roughly half of whom crossed the border in 2023 and the first half of 2024 alone. She’s been able to live relatively freely in Thailand, attending university and traveling for conferences and academic workshops. But her seemingly normal life is clouded by constant anxiety over the possibility of being sent back home.
The junta has tried to compel civil servants living in Myanmar to come back to work. It has threatened family members of dissidents, expelled strike participants from government housing and even brutally murdered some. (In 2022, a teacher was publicly beheaded by the junta in central Myanmar, where resistance to the military is fierce.) The junta promises amnesty, but most greet this with skepticism.
The military has exerted pressure on those outside the country through their passports. Myanmar passports are only valid for five years, which means that anyone who applied for a travel document right after the coup in 2021, including Hnin Aye, must now get it renewed. Many choose to make use of a corrupt brokerage system, where people with connections in the foreign ministry and other regime appendages facilitate large bribes for new, and sometimes fake, documentation. But it is by no means a guarantee, especially as the junta expands a digitalized system to track, restrict and repress its citizens. Identity and statehood have become a new weapon.

The Rise and Fall of Tech Worker Power
submitted by alyaza to technology
23 points | 2 comments
https://www.bostonreview.net/articles/the-rise-and-fall-of-tech-worker-power/When we were hired by the United Electrical Workers to spearhead the union drive at Twitter, it seemed the tech industry might finally be bending to progressive pressure. It was early in 2022, a year after the historic Capitol attacks of January 6, which saw Donald Trump call on his nearly eighty-eight million Twitter followers in an attempt to overturn his electoral defeat to Joe Biden. More and more public outrage was being directed at the tools that had enabled the president to mobilize his supporters. And Twitter, after deleting a series of Trump’s incendiary posts, had taken the most extreme measure of all the major social media platforms by issuing a permanent ban on the sitting president’s account.
Many outside the industry attributed the decision to Silicon Valley’s then-progressive values—management taking a principled stand against an overt attack on democracy—but in reality, it was almost entirely worker-driven. Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s founder and then-CEO, initially hesitated to take action after the Capitol attack. He said to staff that the company was not “the government,” and it was the responsibility of elected officials—not a private platform—to “do the work to right this and bring the country together.” Twitter’s employees, feeling complicit in enabling Trump’s insurrection, pushed management for decisive action. Two days after the sitting president’s self-coup attempt, hundreds of workers delivered an open letter to their employer that demanded Trump’s permanent suspension. “As Trump’s megaphone,” the letter declared, “we helped fuel the deadly events of January 6th.” That internal revolt proved decisive. Twitter’s leadership caved and permanently removed Trump from the platform.
Emboldened by their success and fueled by a newfound sense of solidarity, the group of employees who penned the letter decided to launch a union drive to codify their collective leverage and ensure the platform would never enable events like January 6 again. They had helped safeguard democracy before. This time, they were determined to win it for themselves—and we, joining their drive as dedicated staff, were determined to help them. Clarissa had helped win one of the first tech unions at Kickstarter. JS, meanwhile, had organized graduate students at MIT. By bringing our experience as organizers to Twitter’s campaign, we hoped we could harness the nascent movement’s energy and steer it with some established labor tactics. We knew we were in for a challenge—but we could never have anticipated how quickly the tech elite would dig up the ground from underneath us.

Show HN: Jev Plays Pokémon Red
Hey HN! Wanted to share a fun project I've been hacking on. Given Jev can make decisions really fast (but not fast enough to play Doom yet sadly), I wanted to try and push it to play a more complex game than Tetris. So I went with Pokémon.
I've spent endless hours playing this game as a child so building this was a ton of fun.
I open sourced everything in case you want to hack on it yourself here: https://github.com/christianmat/jev-pokemon
The game is being streamed live including the tokens and cost - hopefully we get all the badges and don't get stuck in a cave :)

Show HN: Koi.rest – watch some fish and regain your balance
Hi there. My name is Paul. I’m a developer, an explorer and I’ve got ADHD. As of the beginning of August, I’m also unemployed.
This last part, along with everything else this past year, has caused me a great deal of stress.
While our balcony zen garden project is yet to be completed, I had an idea to create a virtual one that everyone can use.
It's an idea that, unfortunately, I’ve been postponing for a while now, mostly because I have no fucking idea how to do it as I don’t know JavaScript, and I don't have the capacity to learn it right now.
So I let perfect be the enemy of good and, well... just kept the idea to myself.
Then I said "fuck it" and used AI to make the thing I really wanted to make.
I realized I didn't want "perfect". I wanted "good enough".
I tweaked, added, removed, drew, researched, questioned, tested... I just wasn't the one coding it.
So now, instead of occupying my brain, it now lives on the internet for others to enjoy.
Yes, there’s something noble about making something entirely on your own, but what good is an idea that just sits in my head?
So here I am. I made the thing. The weird, little, quiet koi pond.
The silly project of passion. The little corner of the internet to let strangers watch fish quietly, together.
I hope this pond helps you as much as it helped me.

ChatGPT Helped Tumbler Ridge Shooter Focus on Guns, Tactics, and Terror
submitted by XLE to technology

https://www.motherjones.com/media/2026/09/chatgpt-tumbler-ridge-mass-shooter-openai/OpenAI’s chatbot fed the school shooter’s violent fantasies and planning up to the massacre, our investigation reveals.
In June 2025, Jesse Van Rootselaar received an email notification from OpenAI. Van Rootselaar had been using ChatGPT to discuss committing potential acts of violence—including a mass shooting at a shopping mall—and now OpenAI had banned that account. But the troubled teen living in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was not deterred and soon logged back on with a second account.
In case anybody doubted the corporation that was actively complicit.

CVE-2024-21412 CVE-2023-38831 -
Show HN: Whiteboard (YC W26) – An open-source IDE for thoughtful software design
Hello! We’re Sid, Alex, Ketan, and Milan. We’re building Whiteboard (https://whiteboard.dev.fast/), an open-source desktop app where humans and agents can architect software together in a common workspace. Here’s our repo: https://github.com/devdotfast/whiteboard.
We were missing the feeling of a “whiteboard session” with another dev where you leave with a deep understanding of a system, so we built this app for ourselves. Whiteboard plugs into the tools you already use - e.g. Claude Code, Codex, etc. – and gives your agent an SDK to draw on an in-app canvas to describe its work. We began with an MVP based on HTML artifacts and started rethinking the app as we ran into limitations:
1. Built on top of CodeOSS: We found that in pure HTML tools it was hard to connect a spec or diagram to code. In Whiteboard, when you click on visualizations like a sequence diagram, an entity relationship diagram, or a quote from the agent’s trace, you can jump to the underlying code directly. When navigating code, you get keybindings and LSP support from VSCode out of the box. We’ve found this is especially valuable because tradeoffs are often only discovered after a first pass at implementation (re: slop)
2. Semantic diff viewer: we wrote a semantic, AST-aware diff viewer in Rust so you can only view the code changes which are relevant to you [1]. We’ve set up some sane defaults: large added functions are summarized as pseudocode, and things like unit tests and large documentation changes are collapsed / hidden. This is all customizable with a WASM-based plugin system.
3. Decision Log: We found it difficult to reason about what set of decisions our agents made autonomously. So we built tools for agents to query and link their own traces to the Whiteboard, so you can understand how the requirements that you set were implemented, and understand what decisions your agent made autonomously.
Here’s a quick demo video explaining more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChPn3ftULWE
Folks at companies like Salesforce and Modal are using Whiteboard today as a review tool for architecture or spec-level changes – really any change where they want to be involved:
1. Reviewing your own coding agent’s work: because Whiteboard makes it easier to review large amounts of code, folks will typically have their AI agents create a prototype and a corresponding Whiteboard session so they can iterate on the design.
2. Reviewing other people’s changes: We’ve found that Whiteboard is particularly helpful when composed with tools like Greptile. For example, you can run an automated code reviewer on small changes and escalate to a Whiteboard session for the changes that require human judgement.
Why we built this: we’re four buddies from college who quit our jobs as tech leads right before agentic coding became industry standard. As we iterated towards an MVP for a previous idea, we struggled to maintain a comprehensible codebase while reaping all the velocity benefits of agentic coding. As more PRs were merged without our understanding, we felt a ‘cognitive debt’ begin to seep in, until it became difficult for us to even contribute to the system [2].
We’re releasing our desktop app under an MIT license. Please poke through and feel free to contribute! Eventually we’ll charge companies for a hosted web version that manages whiteboard session creation alongside features like trajectory storage and multiplayer reviews. Everything will always remain self-hostable.
Thanks for reading, and we hope you try it out! We would love to hear any feedback and to learn from your expertise.
Here’s are the project links again: https://github.com/devdotfast/whiteboard, and you can install (for MacOS + Linux) at https://install.dev.fast
