Imagine Git for model fine-tunes that also saves you storage.
DeltaTensors compresses fine-tuned model checkpoints by storing the weight difference from the base model instead of another full copy of the model.
If you have a bunch of fine-tunes or checkpoints from the same base model, you keep the base once and store a much smaller `.wdelta` for each version.
On a Qwen2.5-0.5B fine-tune, a 953 MB model compressed to a 294 MB delta. Reconstructing it changed perplexity from 19.11 to 19.22.
It works after training, so you do not need to use LoRA or change how you fine-tune the model. You can take an existing full fine-tune and compress it afterward.
It also supports chained deltas for model version history, Hugging Face Trainer checkpoints, and streaming compression/reconstruction so you do not need to load two full models into memory.

Sorry for the pretentious name, I know, I know.. It just contains all the pieces I would like to see a AGI model to have, and I can't stand the temptation. Before throwing rocks at me, please take a glance at the Readme, and I hope it will cover your mood a little bit.
So, first of all it does work and you can see the sample from the whole training run here: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/volotat/mini-AGI/refs/head...
Here is the scaling law graph I have so far, and it looks very promising: https://github.com/volotat/mini-AGI/blob/main/assets/scaling...
The model was built under my deep dissatisfaction so we cannot really train even moderately big models (1B+ scale) on the consumer's hardware. We can inference and fine-tune them for sure, but I would like to have full control over what the model sees over the training run, so it is fully aligned with my interests, not some corporations.
I was thinking about for some time and come up with two interesting ideas I thought worth pursuing: MoE with a lot of experts that gets added and pruned from the model while it trains, where only a small subset of of experts are actually in use at any particular moment + batch 1 training on the single continuous stream of data.
First allows us to be bounded only by the disk space in terms of number of parameters and load and unload experts only when they are needed. The second (if figured out and it turns out to be doable) allows us to get aways with small VRAM capacity because we do not need to store big randomized batches and their respective gradients.
I started brainstorming with Claude and after some time we found an approach that seems to be promising, and low and behold, a few weeks pass and you can see the results yourself.
Obviously, I did use AI in the process of making this project and I am pretty sure it would be completely impossible for me to do something like this without it, so I hope it is more than justified.
The model is still running over the first of 7.8B characters corpus I selected for training, so the weights are not out yet, and it's about a couple weeks of waiting until they are cooked at the current reading speed. And yeah, the model just read continuous interleaved passages from the dataset, each by 32K characters long each as a single stream. Just as you or I would do.
The set up seems to be really simple so you can git clone the project, run it and observe everything for yourself.
Thanks for your attention.

My workflow has shifted away from the features of code editors toward just the git integration: viewing commits, checking uncommitted changes, seeing what will go into the final PR, and so on. I'm used to JetBrains IDEs, so I still open them mainly for the git integration. I really like being able to view a diff there with the file tree next to it.
For the actual coding, I use Claude Code in my terminal. I know many of you use your IDE's AI integration for this, or the Codex/Claude desktop apps, which are essentially just AI plus git integration with no real editor. So the features IDEs build around writing code don't seem to matter as much anymore, at least for me.
I'm curious whether anyone else feels the same way. If you do, what do you use for git: an IDE, one of the AI desktop apps, or a dedicated git client? If you know of a good git client built for this new workflow, I'd love to hear about it.

Hello HN!
I'm relaunching Radius [1] - far too long after the original Show HN [2] (I'll blame the day job for that).
Radius started out from my frustration with not knowing what was going on around me. The initial plan was to "show all and every type of event" from big to small, but over time I narrowed the focus to communities, groups, events, and helping people connect through them.
The initial Show HN gave me 150+ comments (surprising, looking back, given how terrible the plain Bootstrap UI was...) with a huge amount of useful feedback and feature requests. I've spent the time since then working through that, along with additional requests from groups using Radius, and it finally feels ready for a proper relaunch.
I've also recently added "Activities" [3] - which are lightweight events, independent of groups, intended to help people find others to do things with - for example:
> John is going for a cycle and a coffee in New York at 10am
People can join and vote for a time that works for them.
I've got a bunch of ideas for where to go next with this, including things like open sourcing and federation, but those are for another day!
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
P.S. it's built with Ruby on Rails, for those interested. I highly suspect it would have taken me 2 more years to get to this point without Rails!

Flock Safety announced a voluntary employee separation program on Friday, offering a “generous” severance package to those who want to leave amid growing backlash against the surveillance technology company, according to an internal email shared with WIRED.
Applications for Flock’s voluntary severance program opened Friday, and employees have until October 2 to decide whether to leave the company. Flock expects to grant buyouts to the majority of workers who apply, according to the email. People familiar with the program but not authorized to discuss it publicly say they believe that a significant number of the startup’s roughly 1,500 employees may try to depart.
Flock is making the severance offers as it continues to lose customers amid growing frustration across the US about its sprawling network of license plate readers, which have raised concerns about privacy and misuse. In the last month, WIRED has documented officers allegedly abusing Flock to track former romantic partners and colleagues, exposed how widely some agencies share access to the system, shown how little is known about the manufacturing of the devices, and revealed in new detail how much information Flock’s cameras collect based on data from a dismantled Flock device.
