A new water tower in Turkey: $3 million. Upgrades for a museum in Stamford: $400,000. A first responders appreciation barbecue in Medina County: $10,000.
These are just some of the public investments data center companies have paid for across rural Texas in the past year.
According to a Texas Tribune analysis, data center companies have donated or invested more than $343 million across the Lone Star state for various community needs, including school programs, infrastructure repairs and emergency services. Much of that money has gone to the very communities that have fought against data center development and is seemingly an effort to win over public support through their bottomless bank accounts.
The Texas Tribune reviewed news releases, public meeting agendas, and interviewed local officials to understand how data centers are using their money in Texas. Because not every donation is made public, the total — the first of its kind compiled in Texas — is likely an undercount.

Geothermal company Fervo Energy announced Thursday morning that it had started selling electricity from its Cape Station power plant to the grid on September 30, one day ahead of schedule.
With it, Fervo becomes the first enhanced geothermal company to reach a key commercial milestone. The power plant synchronized with the grid about a week ago, bringing online the first third of what will soon become a 100-megawatt power plant.
The entire site could be much larger, though, with the potential to generate as much as 4 gigawatts of electricity, Fervo previously told TechCrunch.
“No team has ever built a project like this anywhere in the world, and we did it ahead of schedule,” Fervo co-founder and CEO Tim Latimer said in a statement.
From groundbreaking to commercial operations, the first block at Cape Station took 23 months to complete. As Fervo refines its process, it is aiming to complete future blocks in as little as 18 months.

I've done technical due diligence on acquisitions for years. Most of what changes a deal is answerable from the repository: does the team review its code, does one person carry the recent work, did the licence just change, are releases cut from what's on main, do the tests run in CI. So I built a tool that reads all of that from the history and working tree, and writes a report a deal team can act on.
Seven dimensions, 100+ deterministic checks. No model writes the findings.
Every finding cites a commit, a file or a line.
What code can't settle becomes a question for a person, not a guess.
Public repositories are free: paste a GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg or SourceHut address at borehole.dev.
Private repositories never reach our servers. pip install borehole, then borehole collect . --dry-run prints exactly what would be sent: counts, paths, short matched lines, hashed author identities. Never whole files.
The technology is new, and I'd rather hear about issues here than not. The first 20 people who email support@borehole.dev with "HN beta" get a free Report key for their own private repository, in exchange for a short survey after the report.

CVE-2026-96940Hello HN!
As an amateur astronomer living in New York City, finding objects in the night sky has always been a huge challenge. I thought about using the smartphone's gyroscope and magnetometer, but the accuracy left a lot to be desired.
Then I learned about plate solving: given a picture of the sky, we can determine exactly where in the sky the camera was pointing by identifying the star pattern. This was a much better fit - as long as the phone and the optics are rigidly connected, we can repeatedly photograph the sky and determine the pointing direction with very high accuracy.
A lot of work was done to design an algorithm that works reliably with smartphone cameras, which have limited light sensitivity and wider field of view which includes buildings and trees. I experimented a lot with machine learning, and to my surprise, traditional CV methods actually performed better at extracting stars from the image.
The result is AstroHelm, an iOS and Android app that helps figure out where your telescope or camera is pointing, and guides you to the object of your choice. Just follow an arrow on screen, and the object will land right in your eyepiece or viewfinder. Everything happens on device, and no internet connection is required.
AstroHelm is free to use and comes with beginner-friendly objects selected for each night. Optional one time purchases unlock more objects and advanced features, such as interoperability with other astronomy software. I am also proud to partner with astronomy clubs and organizations to offer free licenses for outreach.
I hope AstroHelm can make it a little easier to discover the wonders of the night sky, and I look forward to your feedback!

CVE-2026-8877910 years ago today, Google launched the first Pixel smartphone and, at the time, teased it by saying we’d still be talking about it years later. And, yeah, we still are, and this is a Google project that shows no signs of slowing down.

We live in a noisy digital world. For anyone with adhd, doing one thing at a time is the key. NOT using fancy todo managers. Win one intention at a time instead of planning, prioritizing, and juggling 100s of things.
This tool is a free, open-source application to help you stay on track. You set an intention before you work, and a big, fat overlay stays in your periphery to keep you on track.
Written purely in C, using raylib.
